Consistency Can Be Boring, But It Works
“The curse of discipline is that every day looks the same, while the curse of indiscipline is that every year looks the same.”— Christopher Williamson
Consistency is rarely exciting.
It’s another walk. Another workout. Another healthy meal. Another night going to bed on time. Another day doing the same basic things you already know are good for you.
That repetition can feel boring.
But boring is often where the results come from.
One workout probably won’t change your body. One healthy meal won’t transform your health. One day of hitting your step goal won’t dramatically change your fitness.
But repeat those behaviors for months and years, and the results begin to compound.
Jerry Seinfeld is a great example of this mindset. He has talked about the importance of writing consistently and treating comedy like a craft that requires regular practice. The goal isn’t to wait until you feel inspired. It’s to keep showing up and doing the work.
The same principle applies to your health.
You don’t need to be extremely motivated every day. You don’t need a new workout program every month. You don’t need every workout to be amazing.
You just need to keep showing up.
Walk. Lift. Sleep. Hydrate. Eat well. Repeat.
Your days may start to look similar, but over time your health, fitness, energy, and confidence can look completely different.
That’s the tradeoff Williamson’s quote captures so well.
Discipline can make every day look the same while making every year look better.
Sometimes boring is exactly what progress looks like.
