Start Your Day With a Glass of Water

After several hours of sleep without drinking fluids, a glass of water can be a simple and refreshing way to begin your morning.

Throughout the night, your body continues to lose water through breathing, perspiration and urination. The exact amount varies based on sleep duration, room temperature, humidity, metabolism, health and how hydrated you were before bed. Although overnight fluid loss is difficult to measure precisely, it is normal to wake up needing to replenish

fluids.

Why Drink Water When You Wake Up?

Drinking water in the morning can help replace some of the fluid lost overnight and make it easier to meet your hydration needs throughout the day.

Proper hydration helps your body:

  • Regulate its temperature

  • Transport nutrients

  • Support digestion

  • Lubricate joints

  • Produce saliva, blood and other bodily fluids

  • Perform during exercise and daily activity

Water is usually the simplest and most affordable choice for staying hydrated.

Make It Part of Your Morning Routine

Keep a glass or reusable bottle near your bed, coffee maker or bathroom sink. Drink approximately 8–16 ounces when you wake up, then continue drinking according to your thirst and activity level throughout the day.

Morning water is not a miracle cure, and there is no requirement to drink a specific amount immediately after waking. It is simply a practical habit that can help you start replacing fluids early.

Your Hydration Needs May Change

You may need more fluid when you:

  • Exercise or sweat heavily

  • Spend time in hot or humid conditions

  • Are sick with a fever, vomiting or diarrhea

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Your needs can also vary according to your body size, diet and medications. People with certain heart, kidney or liver conditions may need individualized guidance about fluid intake.

The Bottom Line

Your body loses water even while you sleep. Starting the day with a glass of water is an easy way to replenish some of that fluid and build a consistent hydration routine.

Place a glass beside your bed tonight—and drink up when you wake up!
